The ERC, set up by the European Union in 2007, is the premier European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. It funds creative researchers of any nationality and age, to run projects based across Europe. ERC complements other funding activities in Europe such as those of the national research funding agencies, and is a flagship component of Horizon 2020, the European Union’s Research Framework Programme for 2014 to 2020.

The promotion of innovation is therefore a central feature in the Cohesion Policy programmes for 2007-2013, where about €86.4 billion or nearly 25% of the total allocation go towards innovation in the wider sense. This commitment is further strengthened in the new 2014-2020 programming period, where 30% of the total allocations are going to be deployed for innovation in the wider sense.
